As one of the main construction companies in Hong Kong, Chun Wo recognizes the continuous shortage of labour is having a negative impact on the industry. Highly dangerous work such as window cleaning and façade painting, are in desperate need of automated solutions to alleviate the problem of labour shortage.

Chun Wo and The Chinese University of Hong Kong jointly developed a cable-driven robot system to autonomously perform window cleaning and façade painting for high-rise buildings.

The robotic system aims to free workers from working in a mid air. It can operate in two modes: autonomous and semi-autonomous. Autonomous mode takes in façade’s locational data of BIM from which the movement of the robot and its platform can be programmed to perform window cleaning or painting automatically. This is useful for the cleaning and painting routines on the façade. Next phase of the development is to program the robotic arm to perform temporary works such as inspecting crack, water leakage and void behind tiles that are often problems facing by many aged buildings in Hong Kong. With the use of system, workers will no longer be exposed to high-risk environment, such as hanging in mid air. They can now orchestrate a job indoors. Robots help us reduce the risk of worker related accidents and thus insurance cost.

"Lung Mun Three Brothers"—Desilting and Pipe-rehabilitation Robots

 

"Lung Mun Three Brothers", desilting and pipe-rehabilitation robots invented by Chun Wo, with a total of three robots namely "Lung Mun I", "Lung Mun II" and "Lung Mun III", were used to help frontline workers clear silt accumulated in sewers in the trunk sewers and lining installation in Tuen Mun. It won the Silver Award in "The International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva 2022", which is widely recognized as one of the most prestigious innovation exhibitions in the world.

"Lung Mun I"

"Lung Mun I" robot shovel the silt built-up at the bottom in a box culvert and use the lifting device on the shaft to carry the silt to the ground level for disposal. The maximum operational distance of "Lung Mun I" is 150m.

"Lung Mun II"

When there are many obstructions such as stones, spalled concrete, rebar, etc., in the silt at the bottom of the culvert, "Lung Mun II" robot able to pick up the silt and place it in a hydraulic lift bucket at the top for transport to the ground level. It can reach up to 250 metres into the box culvert.

"Lung Mun III"

"Lung Mun III" robot is used for sewer lining installation, particularly in situations where the sewers are curved and irregular. "Lung Mun III" robot directly convey the Glassfibre Reinforced Plastic (GRP) pipes into an aged or damaged box culvert to form a new sewer. When connecting with large diameter branch pipes, the hydraulic connection system of "Lung Mun III" helps the technicians to complete the connection works under high sewage flow.
